Cabaret @ the Johnson Theatre

Based on the play by John Van Druten and Stories by Christopher Isherwood
Music by John Kander and Lyrics by Fred Ebb

Cabaret will be performed in the Robert E. Johnson Theatre.

Plot:

Cabaret takes place from 1929-1930, a time when Berlin, in the midst of a post-World War I economic depression, is transitioning from a center of underground, avant-garde cultural epicenter to the beginnings of Hitler’s totalitarian regime and the rise of the Nazi Party. Into this world enters Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next novel. On his first night in Berlin, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-bendingMaster of Ceremonies, “the Emcee.” Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, talented cabaret performer, and an utterly lost soul. Sally and Cliff begin a relationship, which blossoms unexpectedly into a dream-like romance. As time passes, however, the situation in Berlin changes from exciting and vital to ominous and violent; Ernst, Cliff’s first German friend, turns out to be an up-and-coming member of the Nazi Party, and Herr Schultz, a fellow boarder at Fraulein Schneider’s guest house (and Schneider’s fiancee), is the victim of an Anti-Semitic hate crime. When he finds out that Sally is pregnant, Cliff decides that they must leave for America at once, before things get any worse. Sally, afraid, confused, and unsure that she’ll ever really be able to trade the sexy, illicit cabaret lifestyle for motherhood, gets an abortion, and tells Cliff that he must leave without her. With a distinctly Brechtian dose of provocation and a score featuring songs that have become classics of the American Musical Theater, Cabaret is a fierce, meaty musical that pushes the boundaries of the form and literally holds “the mirror up to nature.”

MSU Students get in free with MSU ID

Performances April 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. and April 28 at 2:30 p.m.

Mother's Day Concert

At 2:30 PM Sunday, May 12, 2024, Todd Hill and his Orchestra will present their fifth annual Mother’s Day Concert at Murray First United Methodist Church. The big band is in its 41st year and will feature Kayla Marie Little on vocals, Derek Jones on clarinet and alto saxophone, John Madole on drums along with sixteen more professional musicians from throughout the region (and beyond).

The concert is free, and will be performed to raise funds through a love offering for the church’s Choral Scholars Program, which assists Murray State music students with their studies in exchange for serving in the Chancel Choir at FUMC, while learning to serve as church leaders themselves.

Todd says, “It doesn’t matter how many of the concerts you’ve attending before, this show will pack a lot of new material for you that you haven’t seen or heard before, including a centenary salute to the Roaring 20s, a World War II Tribute, and many more surprises.”

Empty Bowls 2024 @ MAG

Workshops will resume in-person starting in June for Need Line’s Empty Bowl fundraiser in the fall. Please email the MAG at murrayartguild@gmail.com or call 270-753-4059 to make an appointment for your group.

Murray Art Guild, in partnership with Need Line of Murray,  participate in the national Empty Bowls Project, designed to combat hunger.  The MAG, through generous donations of time and material, hosts and facilitates bowl making workshops throughout the spring and summer.  These handcrafted bowls are then given away with soup in NeedLine's annual fundraiser in the fall, raising thousands of dollars.

These workshops are designed for 8 - 15, multi-age participants with no experience in ceramics.  Workshops typically take about an hour; all materials are provided.  We recommend a $5 donation per bowl to help offset the costs of materials.  This is a great project for youth groups, scout groups, office team building, or any other group!

Workshops begin in June and end by August 31st.

Cabaret @ the Johnson Theatre

Tickets:

MSU Students get in free with MSU ID
Tickets are $20

Call 270.809.4421 for tickets.

Performances April 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. and April 28 at 2:30 p.m.

Give yourself permission to relax, restore, and renew with this Yoga+Nidra class. This class will begin with some gentle/restorative yoga stretches that are accessible to everyone (15-30 min) followed by a type of guided meditation called Yoga Nidra (30-45 min).

Yoga Nidra is also known as Yogic sleep or lucid sleeping, in which one enters deep, restful brainwave states, while maintaining awareness. In our fast paced world of multitasking, juggling all of our responsibilities and challenges, we are in desperate need for stillness, relaxation, and time for ourselves. The practice of Yoga Nidra has been clinically proven to reduce tension, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain, as well as many other physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

Mats/props are available onsite or bring your own items to find comfort in this hour long class.
