Historic Downtown of Murray, Ky

Over 200 Years of History in Four Square Blocks

Historic downtown Murray used to be the place to trade livestock, trade goods, buy groceries, see the doctor, board the train or see a movie. Although times have changed since then, downtown is still a popular spot for congregating, eating and shopping.

The court square is home to a variety of specialty shops, from bookstores to boutique clothing. New Life Christian Bookstore has been an anchor store in downtown for more than 30 years. A designated Hallmark Gold Crown store and Willow Tree retailer, New Life offers exclusive gifts for all occasions. Be sure and visit downstairs to get a fresh cup of coffee from 5th & Main Coffee & Tea, located in the basement of the historic building. Bolin Books is the first independent used bookstore in downtown Murray, Kentucky! Cozy up in a charming historic building on Main Street. The latest addition to the court square, Main Street Market opened their doors as a boutique grocery store, offering small batch and high quality ingredients, with small kitchen and home accessories.

After some retail therapy, visitors can enjoy some delicious food. Downtown has two of the most popular local eating establishments. At Mugys’s Hideout order up an authentic Chicago-style deep dish pizza or handmade calzone.

Rudy’s has been the place for homestyle cooking in downtown for more than 80 years.  A traditional meat-in-three, Rudy’s cooks up delicious specials each day, including a long list of southern vegetables. Leave room for desserts, because a variety of fresh cakes, pies and banana pudding is made daily.

All year long, events are taking place in downtown Murray, Kentucky. Even with a chill in the air, Easter on the Square welcomes spring with an early morning egg hunt and visit from Jellybean the Easter Bunny. Long, summer nights offer the perfect excuse to attend Movies on the Square. Rounding out the year is Main Street Merriment, the official kickoff to the Christmas season, featuring the lighting of the community tree and various free family activities.

The Downtown Farmers Market takes place on the court square every Saturday May through October from 7 a.m. to noon. Our market is an officially certified as “Kentucky Proud” and provides the most authentic, local goods for customers. The bread is baked in neighborhood kitchens, and the vegetables come from fields nearby. Even crafters who sell goods at the market are required to handcraft their products.

On average, the market hosts 40+ vendors each Saturday. During peak season (mid-June through July), upwards of 60 vendors are set up. Early May brings fresh strawberries and greens and rolling into June, bushels of sweet corn arrive in farm trucks. Peaches make a appearance, only lasting for about three weeks in the middle of the summer. Approaching fall, squash, potatoes and pumpkins appear. Throughout the entire season, local honey, canned goods and hand-crafted items can be purchased.

Each fall, Murray Main Street celebrates the local bounty with a Market to Menu dinner, highlighting all of the season food available, prepared by local chefs.
