History's Home: Wrather West Kentucky Museum
By Catherine Harris

The journey of each person creates the history of the community, the nation, the world. Artifacts of the past allow those of today a chance to understand their own historical identity.

Located on Murray State University’s campus is Wrather West Kentucky Museum, where locals and visitors can learn and understand the history surrounding the Jackson Purchase.

Kate Reeves, manager of Wrather, explained her enthusiasm for her work, for she is, “The keeper of the past.” She enjoys hosting exhibits people can appreciate and connect to, Reeves said. The museum’s mission is to, “highlight and promote the understanding of the social, culture and economic development of Western Kentucky.”

In 2012, Wrather will host a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute. Museum on Main Street, “Journey Stories,” displays artifacts of the journey people have taken in this country since they first came to America.

Museum on Main Street website stated, “Journey stories will examine the intersection between modes of travel and American’s desire to feel free to move.” The exhibit will focus on the immigration, migration, innovation and freedom of those in America’s past.

Catch a glimpse of exhibit pieces or contribute the story of your own family’s journey at www.journeystories.org

The exhibit will be in Wrather Museum from January 28 – March 12, 2012. Currently, a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) exhibit is displayed at Wrather, focusing on the architectural legacy of power.

Wrather, built in 1924, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1975 and was first opened as a museum in 1982.

The museum is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. – 1p.m. Learn more by calling 270.809.4771.

PostSecret founder shares secrets with Murray State crowd
By Alex Kursave

Frank Warren stood before a thousand students and community members in historic Lovett Auditorium Tuesday night to talk about secrets. Warren is the founder of PostSecret, an ongoing community mail art project, in which people mail in their secrets anonymously on a homemade postcard.

Since November 2004, when PostSecret started, Warren has received over 400,000 postcards filled with secrets from hidden acts of kindness, to confessions of secret beliefs, to deepest, darkest secrets. He began posting the secrets on his blog, and PostSecret became a huge success online with over 250,000,000 hits. Forbes listed Warren as the fourth most influential person online in 2009.

Warren shared stories from his past, along with secrets that were not published in his books. “In Hebrew,” Frank said, “the word for secret means come closer.” He said that the second most common secret was people searching for that one person with whom they could share their secrets. He encouraged the crowd to treat everyone with kindness, because one may never know when it can save someone’s life. Warren believes that PostSecret is a safe and anonymous “place” for people to share their secrets and hear untold stories.

Near the end of his speech, Warren allowed those present to share their secrets, and a handful did. Following the lecture, Warren signed books for hundreds of fans in Waterfield Library, where students were allowed to share their secrets and post them on a mural on the library wall.

The Campus Activities Board of the Student Government Association of Murray State University sponsored Frank Warren’s lecture.
