Spring Citywide Yard Sale to be held May 1

Spring cleaning. For many, this term sends dread and dislike straight to the pit of the stomach. Just the thought of digging through the depths of closets, attics and basements can turn the most motivated cleaner into a serious procrastinator. Yet, what if cleaning out closets could lead to more money in the bank? If sorting through old items could help a community event become better? The Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau is making this possibility become a reality, with the Spring Citywide Yard Sale on May 1. For $10, your yard sale will be placed on the official map. Just fill out an application, located at www.tourmurray.com and return it to 201 S. 4th St. The $10 goes to Freedom Fest, Murray's Independence Day celebration.

True cleaning procrastinators can benefit from the yard sale as well. The best bargain hunters out there celebrate Citywide Yard Sale as one of the best days of the year. Yard sale lovers are overjoyed when they purchase a map for $2 at the Murray CVB office and spend Saturday morning discovering treasures. Applications are due NO LATER than Tuesday, April 27. Maps will be on sale April 29-30 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 from 6:30 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. The yard sale will take place Saturday, May 1 from 7:00 a.m.-noon. For more information, call the
Murray Convention & Visitors Bureau at 270.759.2199.

Land Between the Lakes offers unique experience to visitors

Only a short drive from Murray, Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area consists of 170,000 acres of wildlife, history and outdoor recreation, wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. It is one of the most unique places in Kentucky, and offers a great opportunity to both visitors and locals.

Visit the Elk and Bison Prairie, where a native habitat lost more than a century ago is being carefully restored. Visitors can drive through for $5 a car and explore the various wonders. Learn about the habitat renewal process and the effect humans have on the environment. Next, visit The Homeplace, a rural Tennessee farm "Between the Rivers," much as it would have appeared in the mid-19th century. While strolling through the grounds, farm and buildings, learn about life during this time period by interacting with the interpreters. Also, meet Sylvia, Trudy and other rare breeds of farm animals. Tour the Nature Station to see the wonders of the bald eagle, red wolf, fallow deer and great horned owl. Here, it's all about connecting to nature. Canoe tours and hiking excursions provide a unique learning opportunity. For all the nature without the mosquito bites, the Golden Pond Planetarium is the place to be. Shows, such as "Journey to the Edge of Space and Time" and "Blown Away-The Wild World of Weather," are just a few ways to learn about the far reaches of space in a mystical setting.

Land Between the Lakes is now in full swing for the spring season. For directions or more information, visit www.lbl.org or call 270-924-2000.

Freedom Fest brings grilling competition to the masses

April has arrived, which can mean only one thing to the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau- Freedom Fest planning is underway! Staff are beginning to organize the many events that make up Freedom Fest including concerts, fireworks, family day, parade and street fair.

For the last several years, a professional barbeque competition, Squealin' on the Square, has been one of the cornerstones of Freedom Fest. Last year, Freedom Fest decided to extend this opportunity to amateur grillers by creating a new event, Bacon in the Sun. This event gives every backyard griller the chance to prove his or her meat creations are the most mouth-watering in existence.

Bacon in the Sun participants can start cooking at 6 a.m. Friday, July 2. The competition takes place in downtown Murray, near the main stage. Entries must be turned in by 5:30 p.m. that day for judging, and the winners will be announced on the downtown stage at 8 p.m. Grillers can submit food for one or more of the following categories: poultry (includes chicken and Cornish hens), ribs (shall include the bone) and dessert. First and second places in the meat category will receive $100 and $50 respectively, as well as certificates. The winner of the dessert category will win $50 and a certificate. To top it all off, the grand champion will win a brand new grill!

Those interested in participating in this competition should complete an application, which can be found at www.tourmurray.com, and turn it in by June 18. The entry fee is $30, which includes admission into all three categories.
