Murray awarded 2011-2012 Kentucky Senior Games

After a nearly year-long bid process, Murray has received the Kentucky Senior Games for 2011 and 2012.

The Kentucky Senior Games is supported and sanctioned by the National Senior Games Association, a member of the United States Olympic Committee. The National Senior
Games,
held every two years, is the largest multi-sport event in the world for seniors. Athletes must qualify at one of the state games in order to participate in the National Senior Games.

In the past, the KSG have been held in places such as Lexington, Ashland and Paducah.

In September of 2009, the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau staff decided to submit a bid to host the games. Murray was one of two cities selected for a site visit as the final step of the bid process. Many community organizations helped the CVB during the bid process. Those assisting included the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce, Murray State University, the City of Murray, Town and Gown, the Murray Calloway Transit Authority and Primary Care.

In August 2010, the CVB learned that they had been awarded the games. The games will attract athletes, family of the athletes and spectators from all over the state. The 2012 games are a qualifier for the 2012 National Senior Games in Cleveland, Ohio. Kentucky is an open state, which means
non-Kentucky residents may participate in the state games. Kentucky's open qualifying status often brings in athletes from all over the country.

Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray CVB said, "We are extremely honored and excited to have been awarded the 2011-2012 Kentucky Senior Games. This event will bring hundreds of people to our area over the course of multiple days. It will create a significant economic impact for Murray and Calloway County."

While the CVB is excited to host such an event, Carrico says it will also be a lot of work. "Hosting the Kentucky Senior Games will be a community-wide effort. Sponsors, event chairpersons and volunteers are needed and are vital to the success of the games."

The 2011 Kentucky Senior Games will be held September 21-24. For more information on the games, or to learn how to be involved, call 1.800.651.1603.

Ice Cream Festival holds fun for kids, families downtown

As summer comes to a close, the Murray Ice Cream Festival will provide a weekend of fun activities and a cool treat in downtown Murray, Ky. September 10 and 11.

The weekend will begin at 6:00 Friday night with a new event, The Rotary Scooper Bowl. The Scooper Bowl is a homemade ice cream competition, with non-profit groups vying to see who has the best ice cream recipe. For $5, adults can purchase a spoon and sample all the frozen treats, then vote for their favorite. Children under age 10 may participate for $1.

Non-profit organizations will compete for prize money, donated by University Book & Bean. First place in the contest will receive $1,500, second place $1,000 and third place $500. Profits from the event admission cost will also be split among the groups participating.

Rotary Club President Jayne Crisp explained, "The Scooper Bowl was designed to assist local charities and other non-profit organizations in raising awareness as well as funds for their group while having a great time participating in the ice cream competition.”

Friday night from 6-9 p.m. will also feature more fun activities for kids. Wrist bands may be purchased for unlimited use on inflatables and a rock wall. The cost is $7 prior to the event and $10 the day of the event. Wrist bands are available at all Regions Bank locations and at the Murray Main Street office, 201 S. 4th St. They are good for Friday and Saturday.

Saturday, the activities will begin at 10 a.m. Wrist band activities will include inflatables, face painting, caricatures, a train ride and more. Also enjoy live music, entertainment and fair-type food. The Downtown Saturday Market will have vendors lining 5th St., South of Maple Street. All concessions will be sold by various non-profit groups.

Deana Wright, Murray Main Street manager and event organizer said, “Never before at a Murray event have so many non-profits been given the chance to help their organization monetarily while meeting and serving the community. I am excited downtown Murray will be hosting such a wonderful, family-oriented event."

At noon, the main event will begin, with free Purity ice cream being served until 5 p.m. Purity Ice Cream, along with 94.7 WQQR and Willie 102.1 are the sponsors of the Ice Cream Festival.

How long have you lived in Murray?
Since 1982

What is your favorite Murray memory?
In 1984 I received a call from the United States Department of Education telling me that Murray High School was being recognized for academic excellence and was the first and only school in Kentucky to be recognized at the time. Because of that, I got to go to Washington, D.C. to a conference and see the President of the United States, which at the time was Ronald Reagan.

What is your favorite restaurant in Murray? What is your favorite dish there?
My favorite restaurant is Matt B's, and I like their pizza, honey butter, spaghetti and salads. I also love the chicken fajita salad from the Big Apple.

If you had $75 to spend in Murray, where would you spend it?
I would donate $25 to CASA, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Murray Main Street. I believe in all of these organizations.

Describe Murray in three words.
Best community I've ever lived in. Ok, so I needed six words. It's true though.
